The present study is considered as the first comprehensive documentation of aromatic plants in the Sudan. It covers all plant species within the flora of Sudan and reputed to possess distinct fragrance in one or more of its parts. A total number of 377 species belonging to 251genera and 86 families were documented. These plant species studied, were mainly recorded from literature survey of the main and regional floras of Sudan and Sudanese species reported in the floras of the neighboring countries. Information concerning the presence of essential oils and their corresponding reference were cited under the heading "odour". Plant families and the species within each family were arranged alphabetically. Scientific (Latin) names and vernacular names (in Arabic-Ar. And enlish-engl.) for each species were given, followed by brief description of the habitats, geographical distribution and active chemical constituents of each species. Special attention has been paid to colored photographs and line illustrations of selected species so as to complement the brief description with visual presentation of the species under study.
