Institute of Technological Research (ITR)
1.Establishment:
The Institute of Technological Research [ITR] was established in 1971 as the Council for Scientific and Technological Research within the National Council for Research. In 1994 it was approved as one of the institutes of the renamed National Centre for Research (NCR).
2.Objectives:
Its main objectives are to undertake research and studies in the field of cellulose chemistry and technology, chemical technology, shelter and habitat, and appropriate technology to achieve maximum utilization of available resources for the sustainable development of the Sudan.
- Undertake research in utilization of locally available raw materials for the production of chemicals for industrial and domestic use.
- Development, modification, promotion, adaptation, and transfer of simple and small scale technologies, in the fields of rural and village technologies, income generating simple technologies, food processing equipment, and building and brick making technologies.
- Development of suitable shelter and habitat through provision of housing, for both urban and rural communities, using improved local building materials, design techniques, and basic services to provide descent living environment.

4.Present status and capacity:
- Manpower; the research manpower of the TRI comprised of more than twenty researchers in the fields of the main departments.
- This beside a supporting staff of well-trained technicians.
- Reasonably equipped laboratories for pulp and paper processing, paper testing, wood composite and chemical technology
- Workshops: technology and mechanical engineering design small workshop.
5. Research activities:
- Utilization of local fibrous raw materials (woody and non-woody) through applies research and studies for the production of pulp and paper, wood composites..
- Beneficiation and utilization of locally available mineral raw materials and industrial rocks for the production of chemicals and other substitute inputs for industrial and domestic uses.
- Development, modification and adaptation and transfer of simple and small scale indigenous or imported technologies for rural development. Research aiming at the development of sustainable shelter and habitat, provision of economic healthful housing including the following:
- Planning through a National Shelter and Habitat Project (SAHA).
- Building science and technology including the improvement of traditional building technologies and the development of building materials and factories.

Conduction of consultancy works, supervision of post-graduate studies, organization of seminars, workshops and conferences and issuing of publications and technical reports in the above fields.
