Environment and Natural Resources (ENRRI)

1. Establishment:
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) was established in 1972 as one of specialized councils of the National Council for Research. ARC was amulgamated to the National Committe for Environoment and upgraded to the Environment and Natural Resources Research Institute in 1992.
2. Objectives
- Conducting research and studies in the different fields of environment and natural resources aiming at environmental protection, optimization and conservation of available natural resources.
- Monitoring and evaluation of environmental problems and threats specially those related to pollution and evaluation of negative consequencies of human activities.
- Finding alternatives to harmful practices to the environment and natural resources.
- Improvement and development of under-exploited natural resources.
- Adoption of new technologies in environment and natural resources conservation.
- Enhancment of environmental awareness.
- Application of research findings.
- Training of personnel in the fields relevant to the institute’s activities.
3. Departments:
- Natural Resources Development Studies
- Biofertilization
- Alternatives to Pesticides and Biological Control
- Pollution and Environmental Studies
4. Ongoing Research Projects:
- Use of Neem extract in pest control.
- Integrated pest management of fruits and vegetables’ pests.
- Screening for pest-tolerant crops.
- Use of natural pests in pest management.
- Use of fungi in controlling desert locust.
- Non-chemical methods in controlling store pests.
- Residual effect of pesticides on soil and water.
- Reuse of sewage water for crop production.
- Use of sludge as fertilizer.
- Drinking water contamination sources.
- Effect of irrigation water quality on soil properties.
- Improving legumes production through inoculation.
- Newly introduced legumes like guar and soybean.
- Rhizobium strains preservation.
- Use of indigenous legumes rhizobia.
- Improvement of fish preservation techniques.
- Native plants.
- Apiculture research.
5. Publications:
An annual scientific report is published by the institute.
6. Training Facilities:
The institute has good facilities and experience in training in the following fields:
- Apiculture and honey production

10. Future perspectives:
The institute is now planning to accomplish the following goals:
- Promoting some departments and projects into specialized research centers or institutes such as natural products, biofertilizers, bees and honey production, etc.
- Initiation of new departments in the fields of water, soil, biodiversity and modern biotechnology.
- Accomplishment of projects filling the research gaps in domains like germplasm preservation and biodiversity.
- Establishment of an information center in the field of environment and natural resources.
- Publishing a scientific journal in the field of environment and natural resources.
- Encouraging transfer of research findings and their application on large scale.
- Investment of some research findings to finance and support the institute programmes and activities.
- Improving research quality by introducing new techniques and facilities such as molecular biology and genetic engineering methodologies.
